Assessment test: 16 December 2011, at 14.00 p.m.
Basic level 1 is for learners with no or little knowledge of the German language. However, knowledge of latin script is a fundamental requirement for admission to this course. The foundations for language proficiency, skill and ability are laid at this level. Learners learn German language comprehension,speaking, reading and writing. Needless to say, we also teach grammar and vocabulary. You receive regional information about Germany and discuss the country, its citizens, politics and economics, as well as social and cultural topics. After 11 weeks with 20 lessons per week, you will be able to produced your first interesting composition. You will also be able to carry out and hold a conversation after the same period. A regular and continuous review of learning progress makes self-assessment possible. At the end of Basic level 1, a test is conducted. A pass is required for admission to the next level (Basic level 2)

Basic Level 2 (A2)
This level reinforces and sets forth knowledge gained from the previous course stage. The first goal of this level is to practice relevant grammar structures. In addition, listening and speaking skills, as well as reading and writing skills are practiced intensively and developed. This is to prepare the participants for the following course stage. Training is carried out with the help of material compiled by instructors and tailor-made specifically for this level. A mid-term test is carried out in week 6 of the course to determine progress made in the various skill areas. Passing the final examination at the end of the course entitles the participant to advance to the Intermediate Level 1.

Intermediate Level 1 (B1)
The Intermediate Level 1 stage is made up of 275 intensive teaching hours of German as a foreign language.
The aim of this course is to teach an elevated form of everyday German, and also further serve as an introduction to technical and scientific language. On the basis of teaching material compiled by language instructors from AStA of the University of Dortmund, the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - are practiced and developed.
Futher, different learning techniques are taught to help students improve their language skills.
Mid-term exams take place in week 5 or 6 of the course. The test reviews the liguistic proficiency in the areas of reading comprehension, grammar, audiotory and writing. The learner can thus review progress and development.
Learners are tested in the areas of reading comprehension, grammar, listening comprehension and composition. A pass entitles the learner to advance to the next course stage: Intermediate Level 2.
A basic requirement for students who wish to participate in the language course, but are not yet registered with the program is to pass the admissions test.

Intermediate Level 2 / DSH-Preparation (B2/C1)
An essential requirement for foreign students willing to enter university in Germany is participation in the DSH language test. The test is conducted in the areas of reading comprehension, grammar, audiotory and composition.
The goal at this level is to adequetly prepare learners for the DSH examinations. An understanding of and an ability to compose scientific and technical text is central at this level. Authentic DSH examinations are regularly simulated and used in practice sessions: this is to help students review learning progress and development. In order to promote and encourage good preparation, various techniques are employed. The Intermediate Level 2 covers 275 hours of intensive instructions and 16 hours of communication studies. The communications instructions are completely oriented towards the oral DSH examinations. The instructions are thus based and focused on the requirements of the language center of the University of Dortmund.
An additional 2-lesson communication course takes place in small groups as part of preparations for the DSH oral exams.

The purpose of the admission and placement test, conducted at the beginning of every course, is to determine the ideal study level. Thus, an objective and personal decision in respect of knowledge, ability and preferred level must be carefully considered. The institute determines whether your language skills for a successful participation in the chosen course are sufficient, and makes recommendations.

Admissions Test
If you have little or no knowledge of the German language, it is recommended you opt for the “Basic Level 1” course. In this case, registration can be completed without a placement test.
For students opting for higher levels, please refer to the table below to determine the level of proficiency required of you with respect to corresponding levels.
